Every year we honor a champion for justice at our Essential Advocacy fundraiser. This year we are proud to honor and celebrate the work of Ms. Ai-Jen Poo, Co-Founder & Executive Director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance.

Ai-jen Poo is an award-winning organizer, social innovator and a leading voice in the women’s movement. She is the Executive Director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance, Co-Director of Caring Across Generations, Co-Founder of SuperMajority, Trustee of the Ford Foundation, and author of The Age of Dignity: Preparing for the Elder Boom in a Changing America.

Doors open for the event at 6:00 pm. The fundraiser will follow our Leonard Grossman Memorial Lecture at 4:30 pm. Admission to the lecture is free and open to the public. Each year, the Sugar Law Center honors a outstanding advocate for people at our Leonard Grossman Memorial Lecture. This year, Steven Greenhouse will be presenting the lecture. He is the author of “Beaten Down, Worked Up: The Past, Present, & Future of American Labor”, published this year by Knopf publishing.

Mr. Greenhouse is a labor advocate and writer who worked for The New York Times, including 19 years as its full-time labor reporter. He’s covered myriad topics, including conditions for the nation’s farm workers, the Fight for $15, Walmart’s locking in workers at night, the New York City transit strike, and factory disasters in Bangladesh.

The Leonard Grossman Memorial Lecture was established in 2011 by the Maurice and Jane Sugar Law Center for Economic and Social Justice. The Lecture provides an opportunity each year to hear the thoughts of an eminent activist on a topic that exemplifies the mission and values of Leonard Grossman, one of the founding board members of the Sugar Law Center, who died in 2011. Leonard will always be remembered for his deep commitment to social justice, education of youth, and the fundamental dignity of all human beings. We mourn the passing but celebrate the gifts of Leonard Grossman, whose ever-shining light liberated all around him.
